Back to School & Motivating your ADHD Child

Summer is ending and it’s time to go back to school.  This time can present motivational challenges for any student, but it is especially difficult for students with ADHD.  There are some strategies you can use to help your child. PsychCentral has provided some tips that can be used by both parents and teachers.

Elaine Taylor-Klaus and Diane Dempster from provided PsychCentral with 5 ways to motivate a child with ADHD:

  •  Set Clear Expectations – Not only are your instructions clear but do they understand these instructions. Here language, attention and specific are important
  •  Get Agreement from Them – Ensure they acknowledge your request, repeat it, and if necessary put the agreement in writing
  •  Use Positive Reinforcement – Use words of encouragement and motivators. A rewards program can be a great form of positive reinforcement using both long- and short-term rewards.
  •  Follow Up with Consequences – You need to not only implement consequences but follow through when them. Consistency is key here.
  •  Monitor Their Progress – Put a system in place to follow up on requests you have made. This may need to be done in a step process to help ensure the success of the total request.
